Macalester's Mission
Macalester is committed to being a preeminent liberal arts college with an educational program known for its high standards for scholarship and its special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society.
Macalester's History
Founded in 1874, Macalester has a long history of strong academics, global representation in the student body and involvement in the issues of the world.
An international outlook has long been a distinctive feature of Macalester's approach to the liberal arts and sciences, enriching not only academics, but also the day-to-day life of students. Students from around the world have been a part of Macalester's student body since World War I. The college has flown the United Nations flag since 1950.
Over sixty years ago, former Macalester president Charles J. Turck wrote, "We are living now in a world that must be a world of brotherhood or it will cease to be. All thought, all ideas, all high hopes and great expections must have their natural lodging here among the wise, the poets and the singers who make up the faculty and the student body of this beloved college." |
