In 1978, at the National Convention of the Japanese American Citizens League in Salt Lake City, the JACL National Committee for Redress unveiled a proposal which would serve to "remind our nation of the need for continued vigilance and to render less likely the recurrence of similar injustice" following the WWII internment of nearly 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry. That proposal sparked a decade-long campaign that would culminate in reparations for former internees or their descendants, a formal apology from the U.S. government and the establishment of an educational trust fund.
In 2008, the National Convention will again be held in Salt Lake City, from July 16-20 at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Salt Lake. Please join us in commemorating the 30th anniversary of the JACL campaign for redress and the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988.
Special commemorative events will be held during the convention, in addition to the current slate of workshops, exhibits, booster activities, and National Council business sessions.
Come share a special piece of history with us at the 2008 JACL National Convention!
