In the decades since passage of the Immigration Act of 1965, there has been a dramatic growth in the population of Asian Americans. In 1970, the Census Bureau counted 1,369,412 Asian Americans, which constituted 1 percent of the population. By 2000, 11,898,828 individuals or 4.2 percent of the population identified themselves as Asian.
In 1970, Japanese Americans were the largest segment of the Asian population with a total of 591,290, followed by Chinese Americans at 435,062, and Filipino Americans at 343,060. By 2000, the top three population groups were the Chinese Americans at 2,314,537, Filipino Americans at 1,850,314 Asian Indians at 1,678,765. The Japanese American population stood at 796,700. (These 2000 population figures account for those identifying with one group and does not account for those who identified as biracial.)
